Executive Assistant

OVERVIEW & JOB DESCRIPTION

Appalshop, Inc. is seeking an experienced, dynamic administrative team member primarily working with senior staff. To be successful in this role, you should be proactive, meet deadlines and communicate effectively. As our Executive Assistant, you’ll become part of Appalshop’s 50-year legacy of enacting cultural organizing and place-based media, arts, and education to document the life, celebrate the culture, and voice the concerns of people living in Appalachia and rural America.

Since 1969, Appalshop (based in Whitesburg, KY) has distinguished itself as central Appalachia’s anchor arts and humanities training center. Our mission is to enlist the power of education, media, theater, music, and other arts:

  • to document, disseminate, and revitalize the lasting traditions and contemporary creativity of Appalachia;
  • to tell stories the commercial cultural industries don’t tell, challenging stereotypes with Appalachian voices and visions;
  • to support communities’ efforts to achieve justice and equity and solve their own problems in their own ways;
  • to celebrate cultural diversity as a positive social value;
  • to participate in regional, national, and global dialogue toward these ends.

The Executive Assistant reports to the Executive Director.

JOB DUTIES

Executive Management

  • Work closely with the Executive Director to manage scheduling, workflow on key organizational projects, and the production of various organizational documents
  • Help to facilitate basic internal communications, as well as communications with our Trustees and Board members
  • Manage space use and repairs
  • Review and recommend changes to organizational policy as appropriate

Finance

  • Under the supervision of the Financial Director, help in record-keeping functions
  • For internal controls, manage a variety of financial tasks such as check cutting, bank recons, etc.
  • Prepare reports and financial statements for staff

Community Partnerships and Public Relations

  • Often act as lead Appalshop representative at a variety of local and regional meetings and initiatives
  • Organize and host groups of visitors
  • Act as customer service for fulfillment of products and services
  • Answer phones, make travel arrangements, order office supplies, manage event arrangements
  • Other office and administrative duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

It is preferred, but not required, that applicants have at least two years of college experience (a Bachelor’s degree or higher). Preferably, applicants will have at least 2+ years experience in non-profits. Applicants who are from central Appalachia are encouraged to apply.

The Executive Assistant is a year-round, salaried, full-time position with full benefits. This position offers a salary of $30,000-35,000

Communications Director

Appalshop, Inc., Whitesburg, KY – Permanent Position

OVERVIEW & JOB DESCRIPTION
The Communications Director is a senior leader of the CORE administration (including the Executive Director, Institutional Development Director, the Financial Director, and support staff). This position will work with Appalshop’s Program Directors, CORE, and others, as necessary, to manage the day-to-day requirements of the communications department with regards to Appalshop, its projects and products. The Director will promote Appalshop and its products across available media. The position requires extensive media relations experience, excellent writing and editing skills, and new media expertise. Successful applicants will bring strong communications experience and skills, as well as a commitment to central Appalachian people and culture.

The Communications Director reports to Executive Director.

JOB DUTIES

Media Relations

  • Produce frequent, timely, and positive media coverage across all available media
  • Write and distribute reports, press releases, and other forms of communication to relevant parties
  • Represent Appalshop at local, regional and national events and to other groups—including outside media
  • Identify opportunities for both paid and earned media
  • Develop and maintain good relationships with all media outlets and contacts

Writing, Editing and Producing Content

  • Oversee the production and management of publications including online content from ongoing programming and media production (writing, audio, video, new media)
  • Work with Appalshop staff to develop social media materials and campaigns based around current content cycle
  • Execute weekly social media plan and report on results to Executive Director
  • Edit materials produced by staff on complex topics to ensure the materials can be easily read and understood by media, policymakers and advocates
  • Oversee the publication of original content to Appalshop.org

Administration

  • Develop an annual communications plan in conjunction with the Executive Director. This should detail the year’s activity to meet agreed company objectives.
  • Oversee the maintenance of static content across website
  • Maintain WordPress, backends and plugins as necessary
  • Coordinate website maintenance as needed
  • Field phone calls, reply to emails, and provide technical support to online customers and users of Appalshop.org.
  • Deliver all activity within the agreed budget.

These are illustrative duties. The post holder is expected to assume a range of additional duties as reasonably required by the Executive Director.

QUALIFICATIONS
It is preferred, but not required, that applicants have at least two years of college experience (a Bachelor’s degree or higher). Preferably, applicants will have at least 2+ years experience in non-profits. Applicants who are from central Appalachia are encouraged to apply.

The applicant should be a proficient writer, and applicants with graphic and technical skills are encouraged to apply.

The Communications Director is a year-round, salaried position with full benefits. This position offers a salary of $40,000-45,000.
