The Financial Director is a senior leader of Appalshop’s CORE administration comprised of the Institutional Development Director, the Communications and Marketing Director, and Support Staff. The Financial Director works closely under the guidance of the Executive Director and will collaborate with the Institutional Development Director, Appalshop Treasurer, and members of the Board of Directors’ Finance Committee and Audit Committee. The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and three years of experience in non-profit accounting, finance, and administration. Proficiency with MS Excel and QuickBooks is highly preferred. Grants management experience, writing and prioritization skills are necessary.

Detailed Duties and Responsibilities

Financial Management

 Work with Institutional Development Director, Board, and Board Committees in long-range planning
 Prepare annual budget with input from division leaders
 Assist proposal efforts with budget analysis and preparation
 Prepare and submit financial reports as required by funding sources
 Prepare monthly financial reports for finance committee, projects, and board officers
 Ensure that an annual fiscal audit has been executed by an independent CPA and submit all materials requested by the auditor in conformity with generally established accounting principles.

Accounting (working with bookkeeper)

 Receive and deposit funds from project heads, sales, and development office within seven days of receipt
 Reconcile all accounts monthly
 Monitor cash flow and prepare payables
 Biweekly payroll
 Assist project directors with financial and bookkeeping matters
 Taxes (except payroll) managed and filed on time (Kentucky Sales & Use, 1099s, 990, 990t, CD-405, W2’s)
 Maintain petty cash, calculate and prepare settlement checks for all special events, etc.
 Prepare performance reports in a timely manner
 Maintain positive financial relationships with banks, credit card merchants, auditor, vendors, etc.

Human Resources Management

 Employee files/records compiled & maintained accurately and efficiently
 Business insurance accounts, worker’s comp. insurance accounts, and associated insurance audits quoted out for best pricing, managed successfully and kept up to date.
 Health, dental & life insurance accounts for participating employees & family members quoted out for best pricing and managed throughout the year,working with the insurance broker.
 Maintaining an accurate and up to date accounting of available and used leave time maintained for all eligible employees
 Assist as needed with hiring and termination processes
 Maintain audit worthy retirement plan, filing 5500 when due
