Hazel Dickens Passes Away

Appalshop board and staff and WMMT listeners throughout the land are greatly saddened by the passing of legendary singer and songwriter Hazel Dickens, a friend and inspiration for many of us.  Born in Mercer County, WV and a part of the wave of post-WWII southern mountaineers who migrated to the urban east coast for what they hoped would be a better way of life, Hazel wrote and performed songs that drill down deeply into the essence of Appalachian people and their history over the past 75 years.

In 2001, Appalshop released “Hazel Dickens: It’s Hard to Tell the Singer From the Song,” a documentary film on Hazel’s life and legacy. Also that year Hazel was awarded the National Endowment for the Arts’ National Heritage Award, our country’s highest honor for a traditional artist.
