Celebrating Paul Wellstone’s Legacy in Appalachia

In July of 1997, Minnesota Senator Paul Wellstone met in Hazard, KY with working and disabled coal miners, and a miner’s widow, to hear about health and safety problems in the mines. Wellstone and his wife Sheila, an eastern Kentucky native, visited this part of central Appalachia as part of a “Children’s Tour” to remind the press and public that poverty and injustice continue to exist in the United States. Appalshop produced the clip above to document the visit.
Paul and Sheila Wellstone, their daughter Marcia, and three aides were tragically killed in a plane crash on the way to a campaign event on October 25, 2002.
