Appalshop Archive Receives Grant

Appalshop Filmmaker Ben Zickafoose

Appalshop Archive has been awarded a grant by the National Film Preservation Foundation to preserve Coal Camp: Life Below the Tipple (1972, color), a never-released Appalshop film by Ben Zickafoose documenting life in Harlan County’s Brookside coal camp, and amateur films from Bell County, KY including a silent 1938 film document of the Civilian Conservation Corps in Pine Mountain Resort State Park and seven color 16mm home movies made by Pineville resident Dr. John Parrott in the 1950’s.

The preservation work being funded by this grant will result in the creation of new 16mm prints on fresh film stock–the most durable format for preserving moving images–as well as digital access copies.
