MOUNTAIN TALK ~ A Panel Discussion with Photographer Andrew Stern and local film makers, journalists, and scholars
On the next Mountain Talk:Appalshop is sponsoring a month long exhibition of Appalachian Portfolio 1959-1963: Photographs by Andrew Stern. This edition of Mountain Talk features the panel discussion with the photographer, local filmmakers, journalists and scholars. Stern's photographs document the social and physical landscapes of various eastern Kentucky mining communities during the late 1950s and early 1960s, a time when unemployment was causing devastating poverty in the region. The panel will discuss the history of image making in the region, poverty then and where the region stands today, media representation, and the role of media and media makers in affecting policy making and social change. These events are funded in part by the Kentucky Humanities Council, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Kentucky Arts Council, and Appalshop. This program was recorded live on March 13, 2008. To see a gallery of photographs from Andrew Stern's Appalachian Portfolio visit www.andresternphoto.com
