MTalk Guest host's Lora Smith and Mia Frederick discuss the growing 'slow food' movement, and the links to traditional Appalachian foodways. Robin Robbins from the Virginia based Appalachian Sustainable Development, and Larry Schwartz who farms in Garrard County, Kentucky and is a member of the Community Farm Alliance were the guests. The farming and food traditions of Appalachia have always been rooted in place and community, and keeping a garden, raising chickens, cattle, hogs, and goats, canning, preserving, as is the sharing of the bounty with friends, family, and community. Today, in response to concerns about the health of land and people, organizations like Appalachian Sustainable Development, and the Community Farm Alliance are working to support and encourage sustainable agriculture in the region, and the Slow Food movement is growing in the region.
