THE SOUTHWEST VIRGINIA ONLINE MUSIC DIRECTORY
Bluegrass and Traditional Music Resources in Virginia’s Far Southwest
Welcome to the Southwest Virginia Online Music Directory. We offer this as a resource for everyone interested in bluegrass and traditional music in Southwest Virginia and neighboring areas. In the attached lists you will find musicians, places that present music, radio broadcasts, teachers and music schools, and more. If you’re looking for a performer to book for a special event, or a place to hear music in your area on Saturday night, or a banjo player for your band, or someone to give fiddle lessons, the Directory will give you a place to start. To find out more and to access the Directory CLICK HERE!
The Directory is part of an ongoing effort to strengthen our music and cultural resources in Southwest Virginia. It was developed by Appalshop in partnership with the Lonesome Pine Office on Youth in Big Stone Gap, with funding from the Appalachian Regional Commission This project works in conjunction with the Crooked Road, Southwest Virginia’s heritage music trail. We hope that it results in more music being played, more people learning to play,
The Directory covers far Southwest Virginia, roughly Bristol and west. We also include information on artists from neighboring regions who work this area. We hope to expand the Directory to other areas; for the present, our commitment is to focus on this area and keep the information here reasonably complete and up to date.
This Directory is a work in progress. The information here is as given to us by the musicians themselves. On the site you’ll find a form to submit new listings or to update existing listings. (We make every effort to be accurate, but we can’t be responsible for errors. Please be sure to contact us with any updates or corrections.)
The Directory was compiled by Rich Kirby with lots of help from Suzanne Savell. Contact Rich at rkirby@appalshop.org

The creation, performance, significance, and even the definition of music vary according to culture and social context.
