Archive

Since its beginning in 1969, Appalshop has amassed thousands of hours of film, videotape, sound recording and photography that portray a multifaceted view of life and history in Appalachia. Appalshop’s Archive project works to preserve this material and make it available.

Vault Construction March 2006In 2005, Appalshop welcomed archivists Chad Hunter and Dwight Swanson to the Appalshop staff. They are managing the Collections and overseeing conservation projects in film, video, and audio from the 36 years of Appalshop productions as well as other regional holdings. Grants are providing support for the preservation of classic Appalshop documentaries, including Buffalo Creek Flood, Buffalo Creek Revisited, Mountain Farmer, Whitesburg Epic and Nimrod Workman: To Fit My Own Category ,as well as the preservation and CD release of classic June Appal Recordings of artists including Ralph Blizard, Buell Kazee, and Addie Graham. During 2006, Appalshop is constructing a new vault that will more than double the existing space, while also improving environmental conditions for storage to ensure better access, while extending the life of Appalshop’s media materials.
