Bethany Baxter
Whitesburg, KY
Bethany Baxter was raised in Lexington, Kentucky, but all of her mother’s family hails from Letcher County. Bethany is currently working with Appalshop on their restoration of the old Boone Motor Building, across the street from the Appalshop campus. “I am excited about working with the CCC to document the rich heritage and culture I have encountered in this region”.

Joe BurkeNeon, KY
Joe is a Letcher County native all his life, and graduated from former Fleming-Neon High School. Later attending Southeast Community College in Whitesburg, Joe was trained in computer science with a minor in English Literature. Joe runs the official fan site for Blue Man Group called “Blue Man Library,” and is a volunteer disc jockey for WMMT on Friday mornings “Crossroads.” Joe is also a gospel music performer, singer and songwriter as well as a new age composer. He is trained in audio engineering, podcasting, graphical illustration, video production and photography.

Julie Shepherd
Whitesburg, KY
Julie Shepherd is originally from Western North Carolina, but currently lives on Kings Creek in Letcher County. She is the productions and operations assistant and CCC Liaison with WMMT-FM at Appalshop. She holds a Masters degree in Appalachian Studies from Appalachian State University, and is particularly interested in any stories having to do with coal. In her free time, she is an avid banjo player, flatfooter, and square dance caller. During the summer, you can find her traveling to fiddler’s conventions all over the southeast.

Lora SmithBerea, KY
Lora Smith lives in Berea, Kentucky. She works as a Communications Associate for Kentuckians For The Commonwealth, a grassroots social justice group. Trained as a folklorist, Lora credits her interest in folklore and oral history to the simple fact that she likes to hear people tell stories. When not working, she enjoys gardening, reading, hiking, singing along loudly to old honky-tonk records and dreaming about one day owning a goat farm.Archived stories:

I have lived in Eastern Kentucky most of my life. I have had to work many different jobs to support me, and my children. I have also been involved in causes that are important to me.
