This video documents the experience of a young man who is arrested for burglary and too poor to afford adequate legal representation. Overhwhelmed by an unfamiliar system and unable to retain a private lawyer, the defendant, Elihue Mullins, reluctantly pleads guilty in order to reach a plea bargain. ”The Defendant” questions whether justice can ever be achieved for the poor within the criminal justice system.
