Buck Maggard

Buck Maggard - Deep In Tradition (1986-1999)

Buck Maggard never met a stranger. If you’ll pardon my using that cliché, it’s as close as I can come to describing the joy that Buck got from being with people, and the joy that so many people got from being with him. Buck was many things: storyteller, community organizer, historian, social commentator, practical joker, music lover. But what we remember most is how much fun he was to be around.

WMMT’s audience got to be around Buck from the station’s founding till his death in 1999. He was the most gifted radio person I’ve ever known. Listening to him, you felt he was talking directly to you. As he explained once, that’s exactly how he imagined it while he was on the air. As a result, many of us remember him fondly as a friend who came often to visit us. Which is the real point of community radio. The fact that the music was so great was just gravy.

Buck was an inspiration to me and to many other people who had never imagined that we could actually do radio. We miss him, but his inspiration remains.

Gary Rakes

Gary Rakes - Bluegrass Express & Bluegrass Express Live (1986-1994)

Those who knew Gary described him as a man who loved to tell jokes and be involved in his community. His voice was familiar to thousands of people even if they had never seen his face. Rakes, along with partner Verlin Sanders formed the Bluegrass Express and the Bluegrass Express Live. He was also known as a vibrant charismatic circuit court clerk of Wise County, Virginia. Rakes was 47.

Nora Honeycutt

Nora Honeycutt - Granny Goodwitch Show (1993-1998)

Nora Honeycutt, insurance agency operator, cosmetics saleswoman, disc jockey and community leader - a woman who went non-stop throughout her 83 years. She loved to laugh and make people happy. Nora was known to her listeners on WMMT - FM as "Granny Goodwitch." The volunteer DJ rarely missed her Wednesday afternoon show, where she played music ranging from Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass to Buck Owens and entertained her audience with jokes and riddles.

Jeff Counts - Hillbilly Hayride (2002-2005)

Jeff loved music and songwriting. He was a member of the bluegrass band The O'Quinn Brothers, and others. He performed on stage at Appalshop's 2003 "Voices of Possum Radio." He played a wide variety of bluegrass music and was the Bluegrass Man on the "Hillbilly Hayride." He was particularly encouraging to local artists and also featured bluegrass favorites like Ralph Stanley, Larry Sparks and one of his favorites, James King.
